CCPHVAC - 4 Common HVAC Miss Steps

4 Common Miss Steps in HVAC Ownership

We recently stumbled across an online article where I saw someone had built a picture frame around their thermostat on the wall and installed a hinged lid with a knob to cover the control panel.

The person may have been pleased with how it looked, but it’s a terrible idea to cover your thermostat with anything. A thermostat cover means it will struggle to accurately read the temperature of the room, making the system inefficient and compromising the indoor comfort level.

There are some other solutions to an unsightly thermostat that won’t impact your HVAC system’s performance in a negative way. Such as upgrading to a modern smart thermostat with an up to date look or having one of our qualified HVAC engineers move your old one to a less conspicuous area.

This got us thinking of other mistakes that homeowners could be making that are bad for their heating and cooling units. Here are four other common missteps:

1. Heating the thermostat

Covering up a thermostat will heat it, but using sunlight, lamps, TVs, stereos or other heat generators that get too close can accidentally increase the temperature reading and overwork the HVAC system. Leave your thermostat as the manufacturer intended and let it work as it was designed to do.

2. Blocking air vents

Vents are far from the most attractive element in your home, but when you try to hide them under furniture or behind curtains, the system isn’t getting the airflow it requires to run efficiently and keep a comfortable temperature throughout your home Keep them uncovered and dust them often for a more efficient HVAC system.

3. Using a high-quality air filter

Some people think that a higher number on an air filter package must mean it is better quality, while others mostly reach for whatever filter is the cheapest. A cheap filter will result in poor air quality, but a very efficient air filter can cause too much resistance in airflow for a standard residential HVAC system to efficiently handle, especially if it is an ageing system.

Instead of going by the cost or the brand name, check your HVAC manual for recommendations or talk to our engineers. The best air filters strike a balance between particulate removal and overall heating and cooling efficiency in your system.

4. Keeping vents and doors closed in unused areas

This can lower the efficiency rating of a central air conditioning system and cause some humidity problems. It’s actually a myth that closing off rooms will save you energy, even if the rooms aren’t used that often. Closing doors for a forced-air heating/cooling system in a typical, insulated home will most certainly make the equipment work harder and cost you more.
