Humidity Linked to Health

In the UK, it is estimated that influenza causes 6 million working days to be lost every year, and accounts for 400,000 GP visits. Flu also causes around 600 deaths directly every yearThe studies involved infecting mice with fl and an estimated 10,000 further deaths from ‘flu-related causes’. The has been recent scientific studies, such as the one from Yale showing the importance of humidity concerning combatting flu. Regardless of such a study, there remains no legislation in the UK for public or commercial buildings to maintain a humidity level for health.

The study involved infecting mice with the flu virus (as they react the same as humans) and then kept in either a low or medium humidity environment. The results showed that mice kept in the low humidity suffered much worth with the disease or those in the medium humidity.

Since the results from the study have come in consultants from Harvard Medical School, have suggested a 40-60 humidity in all homes, schools, hospitals aeroplanes and offices.
